Samuel Shanahoy was born and raised in Western Sydney and at age 13 became an active part in DIY punk scenes and came out as a lesbian. As a teen he was very inspired by riot grrrl and played in bands without having any prior instrument knowledge, which gained him popularity and a fan base on Myspace. Despite always wanting to study photography he graduated from TAFE with a Diploma in Youth Work in 2008. At age 21 he came out as trans and started to live between the United States and Australia. In late 2011 after returning to Australia heart broken and without a place to live he decided he would finally start to do what he always wanted to do and make films. Having grown up in underground punk and queer communities he approached this the only way he knew how: with a DIY attitude, working with a very low budget, using friends as cast and crew, watching youtube tutorials and teaching himself how to write a screenplay using a copy of the screenplay of Welcome to the Dollhouse that he found in a pile of trash on the side of the road a few years earlier. Skate Bitches was his first film and since its release he has written, directed, produced and art directed a number of music videos, short films and queer pornos. His work has a strong aesthetic of colourful teenage subculture and is likened to 90s pop culture and current internet and tumblr trends. Samuel lists his three main artistc inspirations as mtv’s Daria, John Waters’ films and his own personal experiences and life.
